Alphabet Sampler
A full A to Z in a clean 5x7 hand, with a ticked border. Stitch it whole as a sampler, or lift single letters for monograms and names.

Black Cat
A cat sitting with its tail curled round, worked almost entirely in one colour. Four shades, no shading to judge, and it reads from across the room.

Christmas Tree
A gold-starred tree hung with red, blue and gold baubles, with a present on either side. Five colours, no shading to judge, and it works up in an evening or two.

Easter Eggs
Three painted eggs — striped, chevroned and spotted — nestled in the grass. Seven pastel DMC shades and a chart you can finish over a long weekend.

Halloween Pumpkin
A carved jack-o’-lantern grinning under a full moon, with two bats crossing the sky. Six colours, whole stitches only, and it frames at about eight inches square.

Rainbow
Six bands of colour arcing out of two clouds. Bright, quick and forgiving — a good first chart to work, or to put in front of a child.

Snowflake
An eight-armed snowflake in two blues, worked on bare fabric. Two colours, no counting past the centre — the symmetry does the rest.

Strawberry
A ripe strawberry with a green crown and pale yellow seeds. Six colours, under an hour of stitching, and a good excuse to try single-stitch detail.

Toadstool
A spotted red cap on a cream stem, sitting in a tuft of grass. Six colours and small enough to finish in a weekend.

Thanksgiving Turkey
A turkey with its tail fanned into nine feathers of gold, amber and rust. Nine colours, whole stitches only, and small enough to finish before the table is laid.

Cozy Christmas Scene
A snow-covered cottage across a stone bridge, with a lit tree in the garden and a lantern at the gate. 120 × 120 stitches in 15 DMC shades — a proper winter project.
